When looking at our gallery, it is important to analyze the information we've gathered with respect to anthropology and its relationship with gender. One major idea that is important to think about with respect to women in music is that gender is a social construct.

Gender is a social construct.

The idea that women aren't represented enough in music is rooted in the idea of gender binary, which is a western construct. Without this binary, the root of this movement is shifted toward the idea that cisgendered men are over-represented in music. Thus, it is important to recognize that this social construct is present in the movement of female representation in music. However, this social construction of a binary is a relation of power, and this intersects with other relations of power.

Gender is a relation of power and intersects with other relations of power.

Intersectionality is a key source of analysis with respect to gender and anthropology. It is very important to realize that when we look at the fact that women are underrepresented in music, black women and women of color are even more underrepresented. The gender binary presents a relation of power between men and women, but it also creates a relation of power between people that are cisgender and people that are transgender or non-binary. Only at these intersection between race, color, gender, and other relations of power can we understand that it is important to have representation of all genders, of all cultures, and of all races and religions. Without the intersectionality aspect of a women's movement, it becomes an exclusive movement.
